Those famous lyrics from Billy Joel’s “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” definitely ring true when it comes to selecting wine. Whether you want a glass of wine to unwind after a long day, or you are looking for a selection of wines to offer guests at a dinner party, the rules have changed. These days, anything goes.

The standards about serving red wine with meats or white wine with chicken are merely guidelines that you can use as a reference. They are not set in stone because moods and tastes can vary dramatically. I find that my wine mood changes quite a bit. For the most part, I prefer red wines. That is not to say that I don’t like white wine, because I do, but I tend to be more partial to red varietals. I go through phases, and that seems to be the latest trend in the world of wine.

If you are having a party where you will be serving wine, go for variety. Your guests will most likely drink their favorite instead of referring to some outdated method for choosing their wine. Branch out a little and break those rules! Drink (and serve) based on “whatever kind of mood you’re in tonight.” Thank you, Billy Joel, for those words of wisdom.
